Futurism

Futurism is to do with movement within a photograph using a slow shutter speed to capture whatever movement that looks like it is still moving (a motion blur)Image result for slow shutter speed

This is a photograph taken in London using a slow shutter speed to capture the bus lights (1/30)  this makes the image look like there is movement as we can see the bus number in the top right of the image where as we cant actually see the bus just the headlights. A slow shutter speed is a setting on a camera that will slowly shut the lens to capture the image you are trying to take.

Futurism can connote war, danger & anti-nature

Using a slo shutter speed it can connote unity and far more power behind it with a stronger meaning , this style of photography is usually used with planes, cars, sports as these can al move quite quickly and can capture the speed/pace of the light.

The art of the past can be challenged as that is more traditional and we are celebrating technology with what we can do with art these days.

Anton Giulio Bragaglia

Anton Giulio Bragaglia Salutando (fotodinamica 1911)

Anton is a pioneer in Italian Futurist photography, born in Italy in 1890. he was an artist with wide interests, he also wrote about film, theatre and dance. This photograph denotes a man moving about aggressively from what we can see, this connotes anger or paranoia from something we do not know but we can see the way he moves isn't quite as normal as most of us. This photograph was taken in the 1930s

Here is my recreation in he style of an American surrealist photographer Anton Giulio Bragaglia, I have decided to that I want to recreate this image out of them all because of the meaning and journalism behind them.
This image connotes a boy that is distressed, as if the boy was caught up in a train of thoughts and no way of expressing how he feels. The meaning behind this story is that we shouldn't be alone with our thoughts and what we are thinking, we should all have our own way of expressing our creativity and not care what other people think about us. We all have our own aesthetics and appreciate life so why should we over complicate thoughts how others view us for who and what we are. If you have created anything at all you shouldn't be worried to release it, music, art, paintings, drawings you should release it for others to appreciate what you have created and expressed how you feel within however way you feel of expression.
to create this image I have used Photoshop CC 2018, this is a software used by a lot of graphic designers and this will help me to my full advantage of a recreation. The tool I have used to create the blur/movement of the boy's face is the 'Polygonal Lasso Tool' this allowed me to outline and move/enlarge the part of the face I have cut out, moving the image slightly every time I duplicate it will create this blurred distressed look. I have also used levels, brightness & contrast, opacity and greyscale. These all help with bringing in the colours and making the greyscale look more black and white rather than grey and white. Using levels also helps connote darkness and loneliness rather as it can make the image really dark and gloomy creating a more low and upsetting vibe for the people viewing the image.

Recreations

Surrealism

This is an image I created using Photoshop CC 2018, the tools I used are:

- Polygonal Lasso Tool

- Greyscale

- Rubber

I used these tools the polygonal lasso tool and the rubber as these two tools would help me create the perfect shape to cut out the eyes and all look the same without being different shapes or sizes. I used greyscale as using this image looks a lot better in black and white rather than in colour and I feel greyscale makes any image look more powerful unless the aim is for a colourful contrasting photograph.

The meaning behind this image is to represent people experiences that we shouldn’t judge people for what they are but like them for who they are. There are people out there that have seen things that some people couldn’t even think of and are still finding a way to be respected and accepted in life and we should accept these people, they are nothing different just people like me and you. People need to realise that we should be grateful for what we have, not what we haven’t. Just because we don’t see or hear things going on in the world doesn’t mean that they aren’t happening and people have to go through these things, we should accept these people for being strong and not dislike them because they are different, we all have different experiences in life and some more than others.

Postmodernism

POSTMODERNISM

Postmodernism - I know that postmonderism is a style in the arts and architecture which represents a department from modernism and by self-conscious use of styles nand conventions with a mix of many different styles.

This photograph suggests that there is a colide in different architectures and he sees the area different to how others see it, the worl is changing and so is everything around him. He could feel that he wants things to go back to how they used to be or even he could have owned the house in an earlier stage of luife and now he is looking back on life with this photograph.

Sherrie Levine
Image result for Sherrie Levine

Sherrie Levine is an American photograher, painter and conceptual artist. Sherrie is 71 years old and is known mainly for her photography. I have chosen this image as I feel it has meaning that this man looks sad or angry and there is a reason he is like this.

This photograph was taken un 1987 under the postmodernism movement. This photograph connotes a man stood up straight looking towards us with an aggressive look and looking depressed, the man seems as if something has ruined his day with denotes he isn't happy with life and he's living like an old mafia gangster. Sherrie has taken this photo as a medium close up which allows us to see him and his clothes, the photograph connotes a man wearing a fedora and an overcoat which was the stereotypical mafia gangster look, maybe there is something we don't know about this man which denotes he could've possibly killed someone or even multiple people. the angle this photograph is taken at is a medium close up and took portraiture this shows the models shoulders and some of his body, this also connotes how he is feeling and what type of person he is by the clothes he wears.

Allan Sekula

Allan Sekula is an American photographer born in 1951, Allan has also written books and made a couple of films. I have chosen this photograph because I feel there is a story behind this and a reason it was taken and released, this also seems to have journalism/a story that I want to write about.

This photograph was taken in 1973, the year that marked the signing of peace and treaty to the end of the Vietnam War and was Allan's first major work. This photograph denotes an unemployed worker which is in fact his own father and a family in their surrounding social and economic structures. This photograph connotes a family of a father, mother and little daughter, the daughter entertaining herself playing with a ball while her parents look as if they were arguing or going through a divorce/tough marriage time. This photograph is taken as a wide shot and landscape so we can see the whole situation and what is going on in one photo as if we were there seeing it for ourselves.                         this also denotes that these times weren't great for famlies and friends.

Recreation

Here I have tried to re-create the Sherrie Levine portrait photograph of the man stood up looking straight into the camera, this was a rough sketch, idea and edit. I wanted to see how close I could get to recreating this image but if I was to re-create it properly I would face the model to wear a coat and have more of a fierce or even angry look as the model in this image looks more happy and upbeat and this wasn't the idea I was planning on creating, I also had to add the back ground rather than it being in a photoshoot already having a backdrop I had to edit the colour in as close as possible to the image I tried to re-create.

This photograph was taken at a medium shot with a macro lens, this is why the photograph isn't as high quality as I was expecting to achieve but it is as close as i could expect using a macro lens from this far then having to zoom in using Photoshop.
To recreate this image I used Photoshop CC 2018 as this is a professional software and I can use this to my advantage to create any image I would like to. Using Photoshop I used tools such as:
- Rubber
- Polygonal Lasso Tool
- Clone Stamp
- Levels
- Brightness & Contrast
- Brush Tool
Using all these all worked perfectly inivudally as the Polygonal Lasso Tool let me cut out the background of the model and just have him so I can add it into a separate Photoshop Document and start the recreation. The Rubber allowed me to remove the parts of the image background I missed out when using the Polygonal Lasso Tool. Going on to using the Clone Stamp this helped me portion out the size of the models head and the way his hair fell down, when removing the background it is hard to get the head and hair perfectly shaped as it was originally with the lighting going through and the little hairs stuck up so I was available to mostly recover the way the hair and head looked. Leading me to using Levels and Brightness & Contrast this let me get the black and white version of the image look more black and white rather than grey and also helps parts of the model being brighter than the other from the high key lighting environment we were in. The last tool I used was the Brush tool and using this I could colour the background in black using the size 5000 brush and having it set on 100 hardness for the first layer, as you can see the background looks like it has a grey on it I did this by turning the brush hardness to 1 and chasing the colour to grey and adding this over it so it looks as close as possible to the image I tried to re-create without using a studio backdrop.
The shot type I have used to take this photograph is portraiture with a medium close up angle as this is the same way that the photo I have tried to recreate is taken in and you can see from the body upwards.

Portraiture

The Lighting in this photograph represents the subject of darkness & possibly
depression, this photograph doesn't represent happiness or success more feeling
down or even angry. The lighting is lowkey and more than likely no natural light.

The subject of darkness and surrealism in this photograph appears clearly through
the lighting and exposure as the photograph isn't bright so this highlights the
representation of darkness and the subject of surrealism appears clearly through the
edit on the woman's eyes as she appears to have four which defiantly is surreal.

The elements of this photograph that engage me as a viewer are; lighting, exposure,
contrast, journalism and editing. These elements engage me as a viewer because I
enjoy looking at photography and understanding the reason the photograph has been
taken and exists. This photograph was taken to represent darkness and surrealism, these
two elements have worked together to also create journalism and works perfectly to engage
me as a viewer because it has meaning and a story behind it.

Task One

                 Christopher Rivera

Image result for Chris Rivera
This photograph was taken by the photographer Christopher Rivera, this surreal photograph is based on the work of fantasy; wether it be whimsical or dark. This photograph denotes a man without a head with his neck releasing black smoke while being surrounded by the black smoke. This connotes that the man feels he is loosing his mind as the photographer likes to express emotions in his photography and especially being dark emotions, this could mean that the man is not only loosing his mind but having dark thoughts maybe with experiences he has been through in life. This could also connote that the man isn't mentally well and cannot keep control of himself, letting out all his aggression and depression in one. However, this photograph connotes a lot of emotion the mans body language seems as if he is angry, the photographer has used black smoke as this colour connotes aggression or being upset and black is not a bright expressive colour and not oftenly used for expressing happiness or joyful emotions. I have chosen to analyse this photograph because when I see the emotions and meaning behind the piece it makes me feel that the photographer feels he needs to express his darker side and that not everyone is necessarily happy with what they have in life and we should be thankful for what we have in life and not what we haven't.
The last thing I would like to talk about in this photograph is contrast, the model of this photograph is wearing a red hoodie which connotes that he is hiding in bright colours even though the aim of this was to create a dark depressing photograph.

Salvador Dali

This photograph was taken by an artist called Salvador Dali, this image connotes Dali in a room with a chair in the air along with cats, clocks and paintings. This photograph denotes that life can be a little crazy sometimes even if we are living happily and not everyone lives a normal life. The way Dali expresses this photograph is labeled as 'jumpology' and he believed if he caught a photograph while people are in the air he could capture their true personalities. This photograph was taken in 1948 and known as one of the most famous surreal images taken as Dali was one of the most famous people in the 40s. This image connotes a room with emotions from peace to aggression, the chair looks peaceful and not like it has been thrown aggressively however there are cats in the air which denotes the atmosphere is bit crazy. There is a lot going off in this photograph to all go in at once, the photographer has created this peace for personal reasons maybe to express how he feels about his life and everything he has been through. maybe he has had a previous experience with a chair being thrown or water being thrown at him and wants to capture them into one photograph and create a new meaning.

Art Movement Surrealism

What do you know about surrealism?
I know that surrealism is something that isn't real, 'Surreal' meaning this is abstract, something you can't touch. Something to do with fantasy

Arthur Tress

This image denotes a woman in the floor with her hands looking as if they were tree roots, the women looks upset. This could denote that the woman feels as if the world is eating her alive and changing her. This image could be trying to represent that the world is changing people to object they don't want to be.

Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. It was founded by the French poet Andre Breton in his 'The Surreal Manifesto' (1924)

Surrealism means 'above realism', the movement aimed to find truth in the world through the subconscious mind and dreams

It stemmed from the Dadaism movement, the word ' Dada' means nothing.

Giorgio de Chirico - This Italian artist was the first of the Surrealist painters.

Salvador Dali - Considered as one of the best surreal painters.

Max Ernist - German painter.
